Spoonie Survival Kit: Noise Cancelling Headphones

I've been meaning to do this post for a very long time but I never seemed to get around to it, it always seemed massively overwhelming, but then trying to include everything that is a part of my spoonie survival kit in one post would be overwhelming, I think half of the things I own could count as part of my survival kit.

So I've decided to take this one item, or group of items at a time, & make it a series. So from now on once a fortnight or so I will talk about something from my spoonie survival kit.

So I'm starting with something that is probably the most important item in my personal survival kit, my noise cancelling headphones.

There are two kinds of noise cancelling headphones; the kind like my Bose headphones which basically 'edit out' the background noise using some fancy pants computer programme I cannot understand even a little bit & the kind like my Peltor ones which block the noise using a lot of foam & by making a vacuum almost around your ear.

You don't need both kinds of headphones, they both have good points & bad points but essentially they both block noise so there is no way you need both kinds. However since I have both kinds I thought I would do a pros & cons so you could see which kind would work best for you.

3M Peltor Optime III Ear Defenders

Pros:

  • Inexpensive (£19.60 on Amazon UK as of time of writing)
  • Very effective at blocking out background noise
  • Surprisingly comfortable for short periods (upto 3 hours in my experience)
  • The louder the noise the better they block (which means they don't leave you feeling totally isolated, when it is quieter people etc are muffled not totally gone)
  • You can buy replacement ear cups etc for them
  • There are several sizes of ear defenders available, these ones are huge (I bought them to block out the noise of bonfire night which is AWFUL in my area) but they also come in much smaller sizes e.g. kids ear protectors

Cons:

  • Can get quite tight
  • Can be kind of isolating
  • The ones I have are quite large & not heavy exactly but I can definitely feel them on my head & I'm certain that on touch sensitive days I'm going to hate them
  • They stick out from my ears massively (seriously I look like princess leia) so there's no way I'd be able to sleep with them on
  • If the ambient noise is loud enough people talking get blocked out too, quite common in shops with loud music...

Bose Quiet Comfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones

Pros:

  • Extremely comfortable - seriously the most comfortable headphones ever
  • You can listen to music etc through them, in fact they are more noise cancelling when you are listening to something through them
  • They are very light
  • They are very good at blocking out just background but not people talking etc
  • You can buy them as in-ear headphones if that is something you can cope with

Cons:

  • Expensive (The current version are £269.95 on Amazon UK at time of writing)
  • They aren't as good as the Peltor ones at blocking out loud music in shops (I guess the db rating is lower?)
  • Sudden banging noises (like card doors slamming or fireworks) cause the computer to make a popping noise a couple of seconds later, annoys me every time

I also have a pair of Edz Kidz Ear Defenders which I haven't talked about in this post, simply because I have nothing good to say about them (other than perhaps that they fold up very neatly), they are excruciating to wear & so I can't really give you any information on their performance.

Anyway, I hope this post is helpful for you & that you find the series interesting :)

Quarterly Beauty Favourites: 09/14 - 12/14

Hi everyone. I've been thinking about the way I do product reviews. I post so infrequently that it seems a waste to do a post that reviews just one product, or at least it does to me. That's when I remembered the favourites videos I used to do on youtube where I'd do mini reviews of a bunch of products I'd been liking recently & since I organise my blog photos quarterly I decided to do quarterly favourites. You could also think of them seasonal favourites, so these would wind up being my Autumn-Early Winter favourites... Or I could witter on more & really annoy everyone ^^

I thought I would start with the hair dye I use as I forgot to include it in the group photo (is it just me or does this background look really cute?).

Review: No7 Christmas Palettes

I realised a few months ago that I have been buying makeup WAY faster than I've been using it & that - however much I love buying makeup - something had to change. There was no way I was going to be able to use my makeup any faster so I probably had to stop buying.
You would be really proud of me, I had managed more than a month, almost two!.....and then the Christmas collections came out & I lost all sense.

I think the problem is that Christmas is when all the best palettes & sets come out & they are my true weakness. I have probably 20 palettes or gift sets that I keep looking at as if my staring at them will suddenly make them appear in my makeup collection...and yes I know that is crazy ^^
But in reality I don't know what I would do with all that makeup so I limited myself to one palette...and somehow ended up with two.

Red's True BBQ

This maybe super weird but I am obsessed with slow cooked, smoker type BBQ, things like pulled pork & brisket...really American style BBQ.
So when Red's True BBQ opened in Leeds it went on my list as a must do. That was embarrassingly long ago - so long ago that Red's has opened up a new location since then - but finally, FINALLY I have been & let me tell you it was so worth the wait!

Anatomical Eye Products: Puffy the Eye Bag Slayer & Eye Cream, You Scream

You know how on ASOS you can put things in your 'save for later' & they expire after 60 days of being in your 'save for later'? I don't know about you but I have the terrible habit of putting things in my save for later over & over again & never getting around to buying them. Things where I'm interested & would like to try them but really I need a bit of a push.

These eye patches/masks or whatever were like that. I knew I didn't NEED them so I kept hovering & hovering, undecided until I opened up my Blog Yorkshire gift bag & found one.

Anatomicals is a really funky brand that do skincare (& I think body washes & hair care) quite affordably aimed at teenagers & students mostly.

OCC Tint - Tinted Moisturiser for Pale, Pale People

OCC Tint Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Tinted Moisturizer

I'm finally getting round to reviewing some of the goodies I bought myself at IMATS, it's only taken me what...a month? Whatever.

With all this amazing weather (the UK has been CRAZY warm, even Yorkshire has had temperatures above 20 C) I've been wanting to wear lighter & lighter bases & I'm sure I'm not the only one! My problem is that lighter bases usually come in less colours & rarely come corpse coloured....like me ^^
OCC is a brand that doesn't have a problem with pale,

Wheelchair Fashion: Yorkshire Lavender

Hi everyone. How nice has the weather been? I actually have a touch of natural tan. How freaky is that? I've not had a natural tan since I was 10!
Anyway, yesterday we decided to make the most of the wonderful weather & headed out to Yorkshire Lavender which is this lovely lavender farm/garden near Castle Howard. I've been wanting to take pictures there for AGES, it couldn't be a more perfect background. The tea rooms there are also awesome, stay to the end for my review of that too ^^

Crabtree & Evelyn Handy Tips Event (And mini brand review)

Wow I am super late with this post, I managed to get it done in less than a month which is pretty good going considering how crappy I've been feeling lol.
Okay so about two weeks ago I got to go my very first blogger event - which was super cool - run by the lovely people at Crabtree & Evelyn for their 'Handy Tips' event.
The 'Handy Tips' event is based around the concept of passing down knowledge & beauty advise through the generations & generally about being part of a beauty community I guess. In each store they have like a huge cardboard tree & you can write a tip on a leaf which gets stuck to the tree and then you get £5 voucher & entry into some big prize draw for a family photography experience.

Primer Perfection - High-End & Budget

I never think of myself as a primer person, but then when I was moving rooms I realised that I actually have an amazing number of primers. The problem is I've never found one I really liked using. Until now.
Life being life, I've now found two stunning, very different primers. In two very different price ranges; one that costs £11 & one that costs £28, one that makes you look radiant & one that makes makeup apply better than I have ever had makeup apply. One for perfecting under makeup and one for perfecting makeup.

I'm going to start with the Hocus Focus primer from Soap & Glory. You've got to love a brand that has such cool product names & you've really got to love a brand that creates such amazing products.

Review: Rimmel ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Pencils

Does anyone else remember when these came out how disappointing the shade range was? There was I think one neutral shades & a black, a blue and a purple....something like that. That seemed to be enough for most people to discount them.
I know I did.
But then I used them in my chronically ill prom tutorial, I noticed that there are a LOT more shades now & there's a matte formula too.
So, what are these like? Were we wrong to write them off?

Mauve Makeup Medley

There was a time that if someone described something as 'Mauve' I was instantly turned off it. It just wasn't my shade & I knew it. BOY was I missing out!
It turns out that mauve is a great shade that suites basically everyone (particularly pale people like me). Who knew? Okay, I bet a lot of people knew but I didn't. These are the products that opened my eyes to the awesome-ness of mauve.

Starting with the product that started it -

Sunday Post: Muppets, Perfume & Midi Skirts

Happy Easter. How nice was the weather this week?
I got to go out quite a bit this week, despite my wheelchair being in for repairs/diagnostics....I went out to take the outfit photos, I went to see Muppets Most Wanted & I went to the park to see the cherry blossom. Plus I have been internet stalking a skirt & my Easter present had nothing to do with Chocolate.
Erm, starting with the Muppets movie...

Review: L'Oreal Liquid Lipstick

I am not ordinarily a big liquid lipstick person...or really a gloss person. I do, however, have a soft spot for the YSL Glossy Stains that I have wanted for ages but have never gotten around to buying (£23.50 always feels like A LOT of money). So when these liquid lipsticks came out & people were saying it was a dupe...I had to try it out.
I don't know that this is a dupe for the Glossy Stains (only having tried them once) & they don't seem to stain that much (although if you saw the instagram picture of my arm after swatching you'll know that they do stain just enough to be annoying).

Review: No7 Instant Radiance Highlighter

So highlighter....obviously not a required makeup product but one the people with round, undefined face (like mine) might want to invest in. The point of highlighters is that they make the part of the face that you put it on look more prominent...so if you have rubbish cheekbones highlighter makes them noticeable, or if your nose is as flat as mine this is a lot cheaper than plastic surgery lol.

Unfortunately for my flat nose, my skin eats up highlighter. Usually highlighters have to be very strong for it to do anything for me....that is, until I bought this highlighter.
I have to admit, I did not intend to buy this highlighter. I had heard all the hype but I really didn't think it was worth even trying,

Best Mascara Ever?

Words cannot describe how much I love this mascara. I have literally only just to say got this mascara & I already have so many good things to say about it. I have NEVER had lashes look like this!

I know I said that words cannot describe my love for this mascara but I'm now going to have to try - this would be a useless review otherwise...
Okay, so.....mascara.

Panasonic Retro-Style Headphones Review

I'm not a big audio-nerd. I think that is important for me to say right off the bat. I couldn't tell you with any authority what made good headphones good or anything technical at all about them really. However, I have had some really great quality headphones over the years & I know good headphones when I use them.
These headphones were bought in a rush - with a budget of £30 - when my old headphones broke. Honestly I didn't really know what I was getting into...I mean the reviews were positive but that doesn't always mean anything.
However, it seems that nearly 250 amazon reviewers can't be wrong...or at least they weren't in this case. These headphones are amazing!

Review: Tanya Burr Lipglosses

Everyone says this but, Tanya Burr is one of my favourite youtubers. So when she came out with a range of lip-glosses & nail polishes I was obviously interested to try the products, instantly ordering 3 lip-glosses & a nail polish as soon as they came out.
So what are the glosses like?

Aurelia Cell Repair Night Oil

When I am feeling especially ill my skin really suffers. Not just because I am feeling ill, or because I have a temperature or toxin build ups but also I forget to do my skincare (or am to tired to do my skincare). As you can imagine, after 2+ weeks of nasty symptom flaring my skin should be really, really bad but it isn't & that is 100% because of this product.
I have to be honest & up front; I did not pay for this product, I won it in a giveaway on Caroline Hiron's blog & - although I will give it the same review I would for any other product - I may be a little biased in it's favour.
That being out of the way, I just want to tell you about this product...

Top 5 Red Lipstick

Okay so I am a huge red lipstick lover. I have easily 15 red lipsticks. Actually I think my first ever lipstick was a red lipstick...maybe not but I know I've been wearing red lipsticks for almost the same amount of time I've been wearing makeup...(8 years).
I have come a long way since my first red lipstick, which was one of my mum's reds from the 80's - it was a very 80s red. Not attractive at all...
In this post I am going to talk about MY favourite reds, so these colours won't be for everyone. Red lipsticks are one of those makeup products (like foundation) where undertones are really important. As a general rule of thumb -

OCC Pigment in Clove Review

I feel like I don't talk about this product enough, it is one of my favourite loose shadow products but it always gets just nudged out of the number one spot - which is really unfair because it is STUNNING!
This is one of the only products that I have ever seen in a youtube video & then instantly bought. Okay that's not true but it is one of the only makeup products I've seen in a makeup tutorial & then instantly bought. That is how stunning the colour is.
So why doesn't this eyeshadow get the number one place?
