Being Realistic

I started blogging quite a while ago because I couldn't find any fashion resources for wheelchair users & so I did it.
I am however a bit of a perfectionist & once you are a part of the blogging community it is hard to avoid those posts that are titled things like '5 things every blogger should do' & 'How to become a better blogger' etc.
I'm not a perfect blogger but the one thing from those articles I always tried to stick to was consistency, apparently people should know when you are going to post...some people even recommend only posting at a certain time in the day!

Anyway, I didn't mind posting regularly to start with - it gave a structure to my weeks & it was kind of fun - but as my M.E. gets worse I'm finding that I either have energy to go out & take outfit photos or go out & do something fun. I love blogging, being a part of the blogging community & I love getting pretty in my nice clothes but if I'm honest, the schedule I have been imposing on myself has been making it hard for me to remember the good parts & that totally defeats the purpose for me.

So I'm going to be taking a bit of a step back. I'm going to stop going out just to take outfit photos & instead I'm going to go out to do something I enjoy. I'm going to stop forcing myself to go out once a week even when I really don't want to & I'm going to start allowing myself to buy clothes for me, not for outfit photos.

What this will mean for my blog is that I will be posting less often & less consistently. There maybe one post a month, there maybe three or there maybe none, I can't say. What I can say is that I'm hoping to rediscover my love for blogging & stop thinking of it as a chore because that way leads to madness :)

Powerchair Football

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time you've probably seen me mention powerchair football a time or two. Powerchair football is, hands down, the most amazing things I do, but it is also one of the most unknown disability sports so I thought it was about time I did a post about it. I've been meaning to do one for a while but since I am the person who takes the photos at powerchair football there aren't an awful lot of photos of me. I think this post contains all the ones I have & they were all taken by my mum on my camera.

Anyway, powerchair football is kind of like 5 a side football except there are 4 a side & we are all in very heavy wheelchairs that can move at speeds of up to 10 km an hour.

.....and the elastic snapped

I'm so sorry I haven't posted recently, & may not post 'normally' for another week at least.

Last week Thursday I had a little dip, nothing unusual, just a little more tired than I expected to be. I'd been a little more tired than I expected to be all week though so it didn't bother me but I reconned I should spend the day in my room (it's way quieter there).
By Friday I was the worst I had ever been. It was like an elastic band snapped & I was flung backwards. I was bedbound, in huge amounts of pain & - for much of the day - incoherent or unable to speak. Three days later I got out of bed for the first time & was too tired to stay sat up for more than a few hours (it weirds 'normals' out but sitting? uber tiring activity).

Now a week later I am still getting 8 or 9 level pain every day, I am having to wear noise cancelling headphones & sunglasses 60%-90% of the time, I can't watch tv for more than an hour or so at a time  & it can't be anything new, I'm struggling with anything logical (I thought 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2000 this morning...which would be nice) and I can manage the stairs, on my hands & knees, a maximum of twice a day....which is making it interesting r.e. going to the bathroom (tmi I know but I have to talk it through & where better to do that than on the internet for the whole world to see?)

So, anyway, blogging will be on the back burner for the moment until I get things a little more under control. I will still post when I can but it may not be especially regularly.
If anyone has ideas for low energy posts I would love any advice I can get, I was thinking maybe a Q & A post so if anyone has questions please leave them in the comments, on twitter or on instagram.

Thank you for being so understanding & hopefully things will be back to 'normal' in a week or two.

Everyday Fashion: Accidental Fashionista

The weather has been seriously conspiring against my efforts to blog. First it snowed - which could have been good except it melted really quickly into a grey slush - then it rained & now it is unendingly cold & grey & miserable.
Add to that a schedule (not mine) that has made going to town (where most of my in door photos are taken) impossible & you will end up with a very frustrated blogger.

These pictures were taken on Tuesday after I got back from yet another fruitless photo taking mission. I'd had to remove my belt (my abdomen was screaming at me) & I was at my new desk working out some of my frustration playing with mixed media (my new obsession).

Photography Tips: How to pose in a wheelchair

One of the trickiest parts of taking a good ootd photo is posing. Add being plus size (ish) & in a wheelchair to that & it becomes a fine art. It's also something I have searched for advice on & have found absolutely nothing....so I thought I should probably share what little I've managed to work out ^^ Hopefully it'll be helpful to a few of you ^^

Okay so the basic premise of posing is to make your body look as good as possible, a.k.a. well proportioned, slim & without too many chins ^^ The best post I read on 'normal' posing is this one from wear & where &, honestly, it's where I learnt all the theory behind my tips.

What I've been upto...

I'm sorry I've been such a bad blogger but things, they are a changing. Mostly inside my body lol....

My brain is struggling a lot more than it was before & however much I rest it doesn't seem to be going back to the way it was. Words, language, rational thinking, coherency & attention span are the areas where I am struggling the most which is obviously going to kick back to the blogging. What I'm thinking may end up happening is that I will start posting a word heavy post like this once every two weeks & an almost exclusively photos ootd post every week. But you guys let me know what you'd rather I did.

Anyway onto more fun things ^^

With my attention span being so poor I've been playing a lot of computer games (I know that sounds counter intuitive but computer games keep moving you along...) & I have re-discovered point and click games! If you struggle with the controls in games (which I do) &/or want story rich games where the script & characters are more important than the graphics....point & click games are 100% worth trying out. Indie games companies are bringing out point & click games all the time & steam has LOADS of them!

Of the ones I've played so far I have to recommend the Blackwell series, the Book of Unwritten Tales series & a Quest for Infamy.

The Blackwell series consists of 5 games (the final one came out in April) based around a young lady who's family legacy consists of a sarcastic 1930's ghost & the ability to see the dead. The games are very short & the graphics are super retro but none of that matters. None of the puzzles seem forced, the talking is funny & interesting & when you finish the game you would be hard pressed to care that the graphics weren't as good as they were in 'The Last of Us'.

The Book of Unwritten tales series has all the elements of the classic fantasy click & point games from my childhood: humour, magic gone wrong, anachronisms, endless in jokes for nerds & that kind of puzzle where you need to collect a whole bunch of stuff to start collecting the other bunch of stuff that you need to actually do the thing that you were wanting to do in the first place (you know what I mean). It really adds to that though with updated graphics, multiple playable characters & the kind of complexity in a story you don't see a lot in modern games.

Back to 8-bit graphics, 'Quest for Infamy' is a very silly point & click, RPG! Although it seems to have just 1 ending you do have a lot of options all the way through the game & being able to play as a Brigand, Sorcerer or Thief not only increases the games re-play-ability, it also detracts from the feeling of playing a linear game. It's seriously silly & a lot of fun.

Other than that I got my first tattoo & a vintage film SLR (the Olympus OM-1) - photos of both on instagram.

There's this building in Leeds, the Corn Exchange, which used to be the centre of alternative fashion & culture. It had all the coloured jeans & black t-shirt stores, the Games Workshop store was in there, Ark was in there...all the funky stores were in the Corn Exchange. Then the council decided to close it, they refurbished & kicked everyone out & for ages it was mostly empty & no-one really went there. I guess over time they realised they made a mistake & the Corn Exchange now is a slightly cleaner, slightly posh-er version of exactly the same thing it was. There are a bunch of vintage fashion boutiques, Culture Vulture (an off-the-wall jewellery store), a few other cool, unusual stores & (best of all) there is an amazing tattoo parlour & a super vintage camera shop on the balcony.
Can you guess where my two cool new things are from? Lol
It's a really old building so the wheelchair access isn't great, honestly it's not even good but if you're in Leeds it's worth checking it out.

Anyway that's what I've been doing....

Making Mobile Phone Photography Look Like You Have a DSLR

This post should probably be called 'making your photos look as good as if you had a fancy pants expensive camera' but you know, I've made the image & doesn't it sound way more catchy this way?

Okay so in my opinion the most important step in making your photos look like you're using a fancy pants camera is the editing but I would like to say a word for background & composition. I feel sometimes that people who take their photos on their cameras forget that however good or bad your camera is, the photo is only as good as the subject :)

Red's True BBQ

This maybe super weird but I am obsessed with slow cooked, smoker type BBQ, things like pulled pork & brisket...really American style BBQ.
So when Red's True BBQ opened in Leeds it went on my list as a must do. That was embarrassingly long ago - so long ago that Red's has opened up a new location since then - but finally, FINALLY I have been & let me tell you it was so worth the wait!

Sunday Post: Blogger Confessions

I was on skinnedcartree's blog & she had posted a blogger confessions post & I thought it seemed really fun. I've not really done anything like this before but I don't know......I just felt like I needed to post this. It happens sometimes & I guess that's part of why having a lifestyle blog is so good, you can post whatever you want, whenever you want. ^^
  • I sometimes forget to clean my teeth twice a day....okay, maybe I reguarly forget to clean my teeth reguarly. My brain struggles with random parts of normal routines these days.
  • I'm still struggling with telling non-bloggers about my blog....it just feels awkward & I wish I knew why
  • When I do ootd pictures I take as many as 300 pictures, then I eliminate the bad composition, the bad poses, the double chins, the bad backgrounds, the ones where the clothes look wrong & the un-salvagable exposures. I usually have about 15 pictures left & then I narrow them down to the absolute best. Or I have 3 left I have to salvage lol

Baracoa House of Fashion Event

Lozzy Loves Lippy, Me & Laura's friend Andrea (Thank you for hanging out with me you guys) image via baracoa
On the last Friday of last month I went to Baracoa & House of Fraser's House of Fashion Event.
I don't know what I can say about this event to explain how our of my comfort zone it was & how totally worth that discomfort it was.
Even before I got ill I had never been out to the city centre at night, particularly not on a Friday night. I had never been in a club & I have haven't been to a bar since I was 17. So 6 days before my 21st birthday I was heading to my first night out to hang out with other bloggers....

Crabtree & Evelyn Handy Tips Event (And mini brand review)

Wow I am super late with this post, I managed to get it done in less than a month which is pretty good going considering how crappy I've been feeling lol.
Okay so about two weeks ago I got to go my very first blogger event - which was super cool - run by the lovely people at Crabtree & Evelyn for their 'Handy Tips' event.
The 'Handy Tips' event is based around the concept of passing down knowledge & beauty advise through the generations & generally about being part of a beauty community I guess. In each store they have like a huge cardboard tree & you can write a tip on a leaf which gets stuck to the tree and then you get £5 voucher & entry into some big prize draw for a family photography experience.

Sunday Post: Events & their Consequences

I was a very lucky blogger this week, I got to go to TWO blogger events. My first two ever, both in one week. As you can imagine my M.E. wasn't especially happy about this & has been making me pay but it was SO worth it.
The first event I got to go to was the Crabtree & Evelyn #crabtreehandytips blogger event on Wednesday in the store they have in Victoria Quarter. I have SO much to tell you guys about this event but I'm going to hold as much of it in as possible for the blog post (coming soon) but lets just say that I have developed a huge obsession,

Sunday Post: Blogging, Country & King (Stephen that is)

I love doing these posts, they are so easy to do & they feel really personal. Like you guys might actually be interested in my life, lol
This weeks themes have really pretty much been Haven on Netflix, Gloriana's 'A Thousand Miles Left Behind' album & blogging (the week ending with me starting abeautifulmess' blog life course).

This week I have become HOOKED on the Haven TV series. Thank everything for Netflix because otherwise I would have been sat waiting for the post & have been spending a lot of money on next day shipping. As it is I have managed to burn through about 2 seasons of Haven in a week....

How to Post with Blogger's Block - Beauty Blogger

I sat down at my laptop this morning, took a long look at my screen and realised that I didn't have any products I wanted to write about. I mean I have been using products still - obviously - but none of them are super exciting you know? They fulfil their purpose but they aren't so exciting I want to review them you know?

So what do you do when you don't have anything to review?

  1. Write a wishlist - as beauty bloggers there is always something we are lusting over, so post about it.
  2. Post about part of your routine - it can be morning, evening, makeup, skincare, hair care whatever. It could even be what you do when you check your makeup in the bathrooms at work.

Sundy Post: Powerchair football, Pain & Posting

I actually had to take the saturation of the yellow down on this picture & it still looks ridiculous....

This week I barely went out, I didn't get my chair back until the end of the week. I went out to ASDAs yesterday to check it worked but that's it. I have Powerchair Football matches today so I've kind of been saving my energy for it....
That's what the shirt is - the horribly ugly mustard & blue striped shirt. It's my football shirt. I would seriously swap teams with anyone who had a better football shirt.

I've been in a lot of pain this week, kind of randomly.

Favourite Fashion Blogs

One of my New Years resolutions was to do more fashion posts.
I've not exactly been good with the fashion post. Honestly I've not exactly been good with fashion full stop. I have been wearing 'easy'/comfortable clothes for so long that I'd forgotten why I used to love getting dressed.
So: New Year, New Beginnings & I am working a lot harder at enjoying fashion the way I used to & for that I need inspiration. I'm not the girl I was last time I wore clothes for fun & the style I had then would look silly now. There may not be many wheelchair fashion bloggers but there are hundreds of thousands of other fashion bloggers & I thought that it made sense to start my fashion resolution by talking about the fashion bloggers who are inspiring my new style.

Creativity in Doses: Hannah has the most stunning, effortlessly elegant style. This is the style that I love the most, casual but lovely. It's like someone took that casual student style & then omphed it up so that it wouldn't feel out of place at fashion week...you know what I mean?

Liebster Award

So I was nominated by Vicky at around & around & upside down for the Liebster Award.  It is an award for bloggers with less than 200 followers on bloglovin. The Liebster award is one of those things that is really more a meme than an award but I thought that it might be nice to see out the year by doing the meme anyway. Plus, I am really flattered to have been nominated.

There are a few 'rules' to follow. I need to do 11 facts about me, answer 11 questions & then (depending on the version of the meme) nominate 3-15 other blogs with less than 200 followers on bloglovin'.

So 11 random facts about me - not ones that I did in the 50 random things about me post.
  1. Apparently when I was 2 I described someone as having "a face like an armadillo with hairs on it".
  2. I spent the last 2 days unable to leave my room
  3. I met the Archbishop of York - he came to my school.
  4. I am going to the world con in London with my brother.
